My Favorite Starter Book!
Banana Bites
Bananas can be cut into chunks, wrapped in wax paper, sealed in ziploc bags, and kept in the freezer for a quick grab. The frozen banana chunks will keep your green smoothie ice cold while blending!
Bananas are a great way to make smoothie creamy.. making a banana smoothie a favorite at our house!
If you let your blended banana smoothie sit for more than a few minutes, it will solidify into a pudding consistency. My kids actually love to use bananas to make a raw chocolate pudding, or a chocolate desert smoothie!
The browner your bananas gets, the stronger the banana flavor becomes. Personally, I prefer bright yellow bananas for smoothies. I use the brown bananas for making cookies or banana bread... or give them to the gerbils for a treat!
Banana Circles (pirctured) is the first "recipe" my youngest came up with. He created this recipe as the first dish he could prepare by himself at the age of four. They are still a favorite recipe in our house over three years later.. except now he cuts up strawberries with bananas!
A Few Banana Tips
Why Romaine?
What is so special about Romaine lettuce?
Although we do rotate the leafy greens that come into our house, romaine is one leafy green that appears often. The dark green color of it's leaves draws us to it. It is almost as if you can see the chlorophyll pulsing through it's leafy veins. The gorgeous dark green color just screams out, "I AM Nutritious!"
In addition to that, its expansive broad leaves are the perfect outer wrap for the ultimate gluten free sandwich! I have to say that those leaves are perfect for fantastic raw vegan wraps too! With corn being another allergen in our house, they are the perfect way to wrap up a taco too!
It is also the sweetest of the green leafy lettuces. That right there is reason enough... that means that the kids go for it every time.
Banana Romaine Green Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients
Bananas
Romaine Lettuce
Water
Banana: Peel bananas. You may want to break the banana into two or three sections to make it fit easier into your blender.
Romaine Lettuce:
Peel off the leaves you are going to use and rinse each one thoroughly. Adjust the number of leaves to your personal preference. If you are just starting to consume green smoothies, you will want to keep the greens to about 20%, which is about 2 large leaves. Over time, increase this amount. Your taste buds will adjust, and start to "ask" for more greens to be put in.
Water:
2-4 Cups, depending on how thick you like your drinks. Do add some water to facilitate the blender in processing the foods. Again, start where you are. If you want to use filtered water, it is recommended, but not necessary. If what you have available is tap water, than USE it!
Your willingness to improve your life and health will start you on your journey, but only if you do it.
Blender Instructions:
Put all ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth.
This recipe will thicken as it sits into an almost pudding consistency. Eat as is with a spoon, or put back into the blender and blend to a liquid consistency again.
Makes approximately 2-3 cups.
